We create healthier chemistry between people, the things they love, and the planet. We also create this bi-weekly newsletter — curated with interesting and inspiring stories relevant to anyone interested in making our industries and our economies more bioharmonious.

We enter 2021 with heartaches and lessons learned after a year unprecedented in recent history. Despite the calendar pages turning, the challenges we face have not disappeared. Yet, there are silver linings to be found in the response to the odds the world has faced. The path toward resilience is built with 2020’s indicators of hope: countless multi-racial and multi-generational peaceful protests for justice, the new normal of widespread voter turn-out, and the persistence of scientists who have faced down misinformation amid a global pandemic.

“Inextricably linked” is the most common connecting phrase used to describe the relationship between climate change, public health disparities, and social and racial injustice. These issues are very much alive, from the past and to present, propelling one another. If anything, this past year has shown us we have the ability to design solutions that allow us to address these issues collectively, and any difference we make will have a tangible knock-on effect. 2021 is as good a time as any to continue this fight.

Throughout 2020, “environmental and social impacts of fashion stopped being a narrative framed by…[the] brands themselves,” says Maxine Bédat, founder of the New Standard Institute. Instead, these issues involving human rights and circularity began to stand on their own this year- lending themselves to an evolving, critical discussion by consumers and advocates fueled by nuance over branding. The sustainability-related trends in 2020 consisted of a strengthening resale market, efforts to create viable textile recycling processes, more awareness and advocacy for garment workers, and an emphasis on regenerative agriculture. Although trend-lists close off the past and predict a new year, holistic progress toward ecological and social mindfulness is still in the early stages. Read our CEO and Co-Founder, Dr. Greg Altman’s perspective on what needs to be addressed in order to have a truly circular economy.
