Researchers prove co-surfactant properties of silk, a viable sustainable chemistry option for soap.

We create healthier chemistry between people, the things they love, and the planet. We also create this bi-weekly newsletter — curated with interesting and inspiring stories relevant to anyone interested in making our industries and our economies more bioharmonious.

In March, we pivoted to make Activated Silk™ hand sanitizer in light of COVID-19. That also led our research team to develop soap out of pure silk in liquid form. In studying the compatibility of silk technology acting as a cleansing system, our researchers found promising results. Alongside Manhattan College, Evolved By Nature published an article in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science that proves silk fibroin effectively creates a natural co-surfactant system- highlighting the potential to replace petroleum-derived surfactants that are so prevalent in the market today. A huge thank you to the researchers for conducting the study with findings that fit so well into our mission to create sustainable chemistry solutions without harming human or environmental health.

As fashion embraces the fourth industrial revolution, the risk of confusion over the many advancements and definitions relating to sustainable apparel is high. As more innovations multiply, so do seemingly interchangeable definitions. What are “"bio" materials, exactly? And how does the definition differentiate itself from terms like “bioassembled,” “bio-based,“ “biosynthetic,” and “biofabricate?” Amidst all of the new, evolving concepts, Biofabricate and Fashion for Good reviewed the definitions processes, applications, and examples of "bio" material technological development within fashion. Evolved By Nature is featured as a case-study, while contributing insights from a green chemistry perspective, a point of view necessary to mitigate toxicity and improve upon the performance, biodegradability, and recyclability of "bio" materials.

To protect human health without compromising ingredients, our sanitizing and moisturizing hand care products, This is Gel Hand Sanitizer and This is Hand Therapy, are available for sale. We’ve replaced the need for toxic preservatives, petroleum-based thickeners, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals with our non-toxic Activated Silk™ technology to provide a protective barrier for skin and deliver hydration. This line is available for purchase for both the general public and businesses on our website, while qualifying Massachusetts organizations can purchase through the COMMBUYS platform. With our Helping Hands program, we’re donating profits from hand sanitizer sales to organizations in need. So far, we’ve been able to donate more than 4,500 bottles to 155+ organizations, including hospitals, community organizations, health centers, food pantries, and more.
